Kara Walker by Malwina Maczka

Kara Walker was born in Stockton, California on November 26, 1969. She went to the Rhode Island School of Design.

The artwork that made her famous and kickstarted her career was "Gone: An Historical Romance of a Civil War as It Occurred Between the Dusky Thighs of One Young Negress and Her Heart."

Here are some other murals she worked on, all in the style of black sillhouettes against a white wall

Can you name 5 women artists?

Concentrating on the artists and exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum, choose 5 women artists (they do not all need to be in the exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum but must include several from the galleries or be inspired by the exhibitions there - research their site or go visit) to illustrate and briefly explain various themes we have discussed throughout the course about gender, race, class and art history.

You can organize your post into genres, 'isms, political or societal messages, aesthetics, techniques or personal narratives. You must choose a clear thesis and the 5 artists carefully. Your post should include artists working today as well. Be sure to illustrate your post with various images (and/or videos) and to cite your research. Please reference the Brooklyn Museum and the exhibitions of the Sackler Center extensively.

Feel free to include or tie in the topic of your final assignment if appropriate. You can use this opportunity to dive into that research for this post if you can find overlap.

From our class readings select a 20C woman artist to focus on. Please create a post about your artist analyzing the main issues and art movements from our discussion and explaining the societal conditions of the time in which the artist was working. Explain the subject matter and medium the artist chose, its significance to the work and the time it was made. Explain the meaning and historical significance of the artist's work as well as lasting influence on contemporary artists. Please cite from the class readings and include at least 2 other sources (not wikipedia!) for your post.

Please post a short description of where you are with your semester project. Be sure to explain the medium and exact output of your research. Your project is NOT a presentation, but instead you will present the project to the class in a very short 3 minute presentation. This will be like a pitch where you introduce and "Sell" your project to the class. The project should be published or distributed to an audience before your presentation in class during final presentations.

In your update post please list resources from your research on your topic. These include: inspiration (examples similar to what you would like to create) and the resources you have already that are informing your project.

Please be sure to address: Why are YOU making this project?Who is your audience? What is your message? How does this fit into your professional aspirations? How does this fit into your portfolio?

Be specific, focus your message on a clear point, use your research to help flush out your ideas and where you are in your production at this point. Remember all projects must be completed and posted to this blog by 4/21.

Proposal Due for Semester Project

~One or two paragraphs - printed and handed in -explaining the topic you have chosen to focus on and research, the medium you hope to explore in creating your project (research paper, essay, video, art project etc. See the project description on the syllabus.) Please be as specific as possible. Also include some research you are planning, inspirational examples and other resources you plan to use. Remember that this should be a portfolio piece for you. Be thoughtful in designing how this project might best fit into your professional ambitions.

What were the expected roles of women in Europe in the Middle Ages? How did roles for women change throughout the Renaissance and into the 19C? Please explain how these roles influenced the lives women artists and the subjects of their work. Using references to the readings and to discussions in class, please use examples through to the 19C to illustrate the challenges women artists faced. How did they overcome these or reference them in their work?

~800 words. Include citations of the class readings in your post (Chadwick and Guerrilla Girls). Please be sure to include at least three images and two links. See checklist below for other issues to consider and include in your post.

What is the male gaze (as described by John Berger) and why is it pervasive in art and in popular culture? Give illustrative examples. What is patriarchy (as described by bell hooks)? Give examples. How have you come to understand these structures and in what ways has this understanding changed your views about various art and media examples and of your own identity and role in these structures?
