Catherine Walker
Originally, my proposal
for the arts and women semester project was to research the rise of Feminist artist who advocated for social changes for women through their art then and now. I recognized that this was a
very broad subject matter, lots of information available and much to cover. Now,
I have decided to put a booklet together that will cover some aspects of how Patriarchy, Male Gaze, have affected Afro Women overtime. This topic has drawn my attention because
artist such as Judy Chicago, Yoko Ono, Faith Ringgold, Betty Saar the
Gorillas Girls, Bell Hooks and many more
has addressed this issue of racism,
sexism, classicism, inequality, which has been detrimental to women all over
the globe, especially black women.
Although, they are a
few out of thousands that has been instrumental with using their art to
demonstrate gender inequality, they were inspired by other artist as well. Females in
the art world have struggled for centuries to prove that they are visible just
like their male counterparts.
My research and sources has come from predominantly through the internet, library books and from my experiences in the social environment.
