For my semester project, I will be creating a website that shows how women are targeted and attacked on popular social media outlets. In this technological age, the pressures on women to conform to a certain ideal have become exaggerated and much more influential. Putting oneself out there for a global audience is intimidating and can even be dangerous. Growing access to these social media outlets allows more people to more easily express negativity toward others in a modern phenomenon called "internet balls." These comments can have detrimental, and sometimes fatal, effects on girls and women on the receiving end of this new form of hostility. Even if these comments do not seem to affect the women they are targeted at, these comments set a bad example of how women should be treated and addressed by one another and by men.
My website will highlight how often these occurrences appear on various social media outlets in hopes of bringing attention to how hurtful words can be. I hope that my site will also inspire change among the online community to be more respectful toward women in our digitally-dependent society.
