My project is going to be on the Male Gaze, and how it is still around today within the technological age and modern day social media. The Male Gaze was depicted in many paintings done by male artist over the course of time itself and is still presenting itself today within the social media app of Instagram. The Male Gaze has not gone away, but in fact as become more common in the modern day. With the use of the hash tag #womencrushwednesday (#wcw), it is just a modern form of the Male Gaze, where it shares the qualities of giving possession of the post of the women to the user, and exposes how after all these years that the Male Gaze is occurring at set day, every Wednesday on Instagram.
I will be writing an essay as my choice, and will create examples from Instagram and compare and contrast them with the paintings that fall under the male graze category. I will be using the readings from class and from the books, and I am making this project to show that the gaze is still right on in front of us without people even noticing.
Hi Roberto. I think this is a great topic because it is still occurring today. I also am using the topic of the Male Gaze but never really thought about the instagram thing. I'm focusing on in tv, movies, and just daily life. I know that the male gaze happens on a daily basis but #wcw definitely has become a huge deal. I think you have a lot of great ideas and can't wait to see the finished product.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great topic, especially since we went over it so much in class. I really thin the comparing of photos on instagram and paintings is actually clever as well as unique, it will change peoples perspective on the way photos are posted and viewed on instagram. As Lauren stated trends such as man crush Monday (#mcm) and women crush wenesday (#wcw) has become a big thing on instagram which symbolizes the male gaze as well as the "female" gaze.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a very interesting concept to analyze and dive into. It's really interesting to see how the male gaze has evolved through time with technology and modern society advancing as it has been.
ReplyDeleteYou should take a look at the opinion of another blogger with this same idea/concept: http://livefromnewyorkk.blogspot.com/2013/02/woman-crush-wednesday-and-feminism.html (Are there any similar perspectives that you may have?) Great concept, overall.
