Semester Project!

     Women's Liberation Through Art

For my semester project I drew inspiration from Frida Kahlo, Ana Mendieta, Barbara Kruger, Judy Chicago, and Pan Yuliang. I combined pieces from all of the mentioned artists and created a silhouette of a liberated woman.  The background is the collage of various images from Barbara Kruger, these symbolize the stigmas and dilemmas women face in the world, in society and in the patriarchal hierarchy. The woman's heart is from Frida Kahlos painting "The Two Fridas," this symbolizes the woman's freedom to love anyone she wants without restrictions or societal guidelines.  The flowers that surround the silhouette are from Ana Mendieta and symbolize the connection women have to the earth and the creation of their own self identity.  Furthermroe, the fallopian tubes were derived from Judy Chicago's "The Dinner Party," and represent women's right to choose and their sexual liberation.  The woman's body is composed of Pan Yuliang's paintings of naked women, these symbolize women accepting their body and not the ideal body portrayed by society. The sugar skull as a head which derives from "El Dia De Los Muertos," symbolizes the acceptance of our won natural beauty.  Through these artists and many others that we have studied in class, we have began to break the chains and restraints imposed on us by society.  This is why the woman's body is connected by strings because we are stitching ourselves back together in our own belief of beauty.
