Semester Project

For my semester project, I am going to create a video highlighting the ways in which male dominance still affects the lives of women. I am going to specifically focus on arranged marriage and the lack of freedom of choice Muslim women have. Granted, things may have changed physically but can we ever change the narrow minded mindset that these Muslim men impose onto their sisters and wives? I am going to take the audience through a video that includes an interview which unveils the oppression these women feel before and after marriage. And the reactions that men have after hearing the truth unveiled. The purpose of this video project is to educate men who are stuck in the thought that they are in control. The purpose is to try to shift a Muslim man's perspective towards equality. In connection to the class Art and women, we have made changes throughout years of rebellion for women to be able to express themselves through images, and art. I want to draw a connection to other social issues that require further analysis of liberation for women, or better known as the hidden truth.

  1. Sounds like a good topic. Here's a website where the artist answers questions about the different mediums she used to discuss issues of Arab women.http://m.sfgate.com/art/article/Arab-women-s-photographs-at-Cantor-Arts-Center-6046389.php#photo-7422392

  2. This is an ambitious and very important topic! Please be sure to research extensively to create a stronger project. Find artists and writers and scholars that are already addressing this issue and working to make change. Use these artists to not only help inform your project but to help your research and to strengthen your argument. Look at Shirin Neshat and Ghada Amer from class but also research female artists who are addressing the veil and oppression in middle eastern cultures. Here is an short article that can be a beginning for you that lists several artists that are perfect for your project: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mahasti-afshar/iranian-female-artists-un_b_848060.html
