Semester Project

For my semester project I would like to write an essay about the advance of women equality in art but also highlight the huge gaps that still exist between men and women in this world. For example, in the present, women artists' work still sells for way less than male artists' work. The male to female ratio of work displayed at the biggest museums is still a bit disappointing.

I also want to go into the objectification of women in all forms of art, including movies. For example, it is interesting that some actresses are seeing this and speaking up about it. For the Oscars this year actress Reese Witherspoon and many other leading ladies were supporting the #AskHerMore campaign. This campaign is a simple idea but I believe it goes miles. The point of this campaign was for TV reporters to ask actresses more questions than just "Who are you wearing?". The campaign was launched by The Representation Project, a non-profit dedicated to changing the way women are represented in the media.

  1. I think you should stick to critiquing and discussing the objectification of women in all forms of art, to enable you go in-depth and really prevent you from having so much to talk about that you end up skimming and only doing "surface work" if you get what I mean. I think the second one would make for a great discussion and you can really go in on it because its not a small issue and might take a lot of pages. So what I'm saying is, instead of taking on two heavy topics, you can just choose one and do justice to it. I hope my suggestion was helpful!

  2. You are taking on too much!! I agree that one could look at the media and the artworld and find many places to criticize but you must focus! I completely agree with Anurika stick to the art world. It would be especially interesting to reveal the value of art work that is sold and the representation of women in the art world. Obviously the Guerilla Girls will be a great resource also look at Brainstormers another young women's group who is looking at "the numbers".

  3. Of course you can still use the #askhermore campaign as inspiration but try to focus on art. Maybe you can create a new # campaign that asks questions about women in the art world!?!
