Semester Project: The F-Bomb at Rutgers and NJIT

For my semester project I chose to explore the controversies and misconceptions behind feminism. By doing so, I interviewed students across the Rutgers and NJIT campuses to see how aware they are on the subject. My interviews were both entertaining and informative. I asked people to define common terms used in feminist dialogue such as:
  1. Misogyny
  2. Patriarchy
  3. Sexism
  4. Male Gaze
  5. Women's Suffrage Movement
  6. Feminism
(Each definition I used was from Merriam-Webster Dictionary, with the exceptions of the Women's Suffrage Movement which came from the free legal dictionary.)

Through this experience not only was I able to see how uninformed or knowledgeable people were of each term, but it also allowed me to educate them by defining each term they did not understand. This project also allowed me to dive into the controversies behind feminism; I was able to understand why so many people have seen it as a taboo over the past few year's but it also gave me the opportunity to correct people's misunderstandings. Within the video I made a brief transition into the 70's when The Feminist Art Movement began in correlation to the Women's Suffrage Movement.

In the end, my call of action for the viewers (predominately male) and the men I interviewed was to sign the HeForShe commitment. It's a solidarity movement for gender equality and it calls upon men to take action  against all forms of violence and discrimination faced by women and girls. As I aspire to become a U.S. diplomat one day to advocate women and children rights in South Asia and Middle Eastern countries, I thought my semester project would be my first step into community organizing.
